Sam’s Vintage Prints at ‘Art on Paper’ fair Miami Beach

Saturday, December 5th, 2015

Sam’s work is being shown by (WAS) Gallery at the ‘Art on Paper’ fair in Miami Beach, Dec 2-6, 2015.

It is hard to believe, but this is the first time ever that a selection of works by Sam has been shown comprised purely of black and white silver prints from each of the four sixties books ‘Five Girls’ 1962, ‘Cowboy Kate’ 1964, ‘November Girl’ 1967 and ‘African Image’ 1967.

None of Sam’s sixties books has ever had a dedicated show, something that we will start to put right in September 2016 when ‘November Girl’ will have an exhibition debut at Nailya Alexander gallery in New York.

Thank you to the many passionate visitors who came by, both old fans, some with phenomenally deep knowledge of photo history and young photo lovers discovering Sam’s work for the first time. We look forward to welcoming fans old and new at Photo LA in January 2016, just a few weeks from now.

November Girl Sale at V&M

Monday, November 19th, 2012

Following the successful sale on V&M’s unique site in the summer of this year – as well as the event in Manhattan – we have collaborated with them to offer four rare and powerful images in the form of vintage prints from Sam’s book, ‘November Girl’ (1967)

Sam Haskins November Girl at V&M

It is hard for me to overstate the power of these prints. No online jpeg can begin to simulate the extraordinary experience offered by handling and viewing these vintage prints. They are masterpieces of the silver printing art and unique photographic objects from what is arguably Sam’s greatest book.

Sam died with almost all his vintages unsigned but these prints come with numbered certificates of authenticity from the estate and in all cases there are no more than three known prints in existence (excluding printer’s proofs and full scale book dummies)

Sam Haskins at Basel Miami Art Fair

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Just a week before Sam's death he worked with me to produce the first and sadly, we now know, last series of limited edition prints of his work for the Milk Gallery stand at Basel Miami. Four images, linked by a theme of American Landscape, in a set of 10 prints each. Today (until Sunday, December 6, 2009) they go on sale at the Milk Gallery stand at the Basel Miami Beach 2009 art fair in Florida.

Here are the four images.

In addition, at the request of Milk, Sam released two signed, previously unpublished Cowboy Kate images in the form of vintages, printed and retouched by Sam in his Johannesburg studio in 1963. These are very rare, most of Sam's vintage archive is unsigned.

A catalogue of the images on offer at Basel Miami, exactly as prepared by Sam can be found in this PDF file. There is also an updated one page bio available here. Please note that the full version of Sam's bio on this blog has not been updated yet.
