CNN Video

Monday, October 26th, 2009

CNN have posted a very well made video with interviews shot at Milk Studios in New York in September. The footage in the gallery was captured the day before my stroke.

Either of these links will take you to the movie (although the bit/ly link is more stable for sharing), please be patient while the ads play:

Chatting with Horacio Silva

Monday, October 26th, 2009

On October 7, 2009, Le Book and the School of Visual Arts in New York sponsored an evening at Milk Gallery with Horacio Silva of the New York Times interviewing me in front of an invited audience of approximately 250 people.

Just ten days after I was discharged from hospital this was just what the doctored ordered. An evening with a room full of colleagues who could not have been more generous and warm in their response to my work and the stories that Horacio prompted.

Milk are very slick with their organisation of these events and after the interview the drinks flowed as the gallery counter worked furiously to sell books while I stood in the corner signing and inscribing. The feedback from photographers, art directors, stylists and lovers of photography could not have been warmer or more genuine. An evening of meeting and chatting with top level colleagues that left one old man with a lot of good memories.

Thanks to Kyle Dean Reinford for the following six images.

Book Signing Joy

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Mainly in an attempt to lift my spirits my son Ludwig hurriedly planned two signing days at Milk immediately on my discharge from St Vincent's hospital where I had spent a week being treated for a stroke.

Ludwig was worried that two five hour sessions on the weekend, advertised with almost no notice, would leave me kicking my heals at Milk. With the help of e-mail, Twitter and the blog, his concern were soon proved wrong. There was a constant stream of visitors, many from upstate and neighbouring states, not just buying multiple copies of Fashion Etcetera but also unpacking heavily viewed copies of my earlier books from boxes and rucksacks. Old friends, new faces, wonderful people. I lost count of the number of people who told me that they had decided on a career in photography as a result of my work. Two special days.

One very special surprise visitor was Moira Forjaz, one of the models from Cowboy Kate. She too made a subsequent career on the other side of the camera. Moira is now a respected photographer, activist, award winning documentary director and Mozambique music festival organiser. We had not seen each other since the mid sixties. The two images below are samples of her work.

...and here is my photograph of Moira posing with Voltaire that appeared in Cowboy Kate.

The Opening I Missed

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Not only did I miss the friends and family opening on September 19th, the day of my stroke, I also missed the sponsor's party on September 24th, my second last day in hospital. However, Ludwig arranged for a small group of visitors to visit me in my room at St Vincent's while the party was in progress. After my first shower in a week and free of hospital gown and IV drip plumbing, it was joy to welcome them - especially Mary McFadden who is a dear and loyal old friend from our days in Johannesburg.

Meanwhile back at Milk, a few blocks away...
