Rapid Recovery

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

With the help of excellent clinical care at St Vincent's Hospital in New York plus the loving care of family and a fierce determination to get well, Sam left hospital a week after his admission from a moderate stroke. The speed of his recovery left even experienced staff amazed. The said "we cannot connect your admission notes with the patient we see before us". The doctor doing the discharge exam said "the army will have you" to which Sam replied "they will have anybody".

Of course he will need weeks of rehab but he resumed work yesterday signing books at Milk Gallery for the project sponsor, Tommy Hilfiger.

A charming French lady who works for the UN Secretary General came in and said "Oh my God, I heard on the news that you were seriously ill and here you are signing books, this is wonderful"!

We are all enormously relieved to see Sam well on the road to recovery.

He will resume posting to his blog tomorrow.

Triumph and Tragedy

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Yesterday morning, in his hotel room in New York, less than 12 hours before the opening of the most important exhibition of his career, Sam suffered what doctor's are classifying as a moderate stroke.

He is currently being stabilised at St Vincent's hospital and is eventually expected to recover most of his mobility. He will certainly require weeks of rehabilitation in New York before returning home to Australia.

He remains lucid - even in the emergency room he was issuing instructions about the lighting in the gallery and urging me to keep posting to his blog while he was recovering.

While an extraordinary 82 year old man lies very ill in a hospital in New York, a few blocks away there is an exhibition of roughly 200 of his images spanning his career - the first thematic slice through his archive.

Many people have been writing and calling, offering to help. Sam is being very well cared for, the best thing that people can do for him now, is to see his show!

I will continue posting to the blog on Sam's behalf while he recovers.

The Exhibition draws closer

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Peter Muscato, the superb framer in Brooklyn, is close to completing the framing of the Fashion Etecetera show. Here's a snapshot from his workshop.

I am very much looking forward to hanging the show - all 109 frames - with the Milk crew, starting on the 17th.
