African Image – Celebrating sub-Saharan Africa

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

'African Image' was published in 1967 the last full calendar year that Sam and Alida were based in Johannesburg. This was his parting love letter to Africa. It was long before art books on Africa were popular and Sam's wife Alida had a tough time getting publishers to take the book. She twisted arms by saying they could have 'November Girl' (the book the followed 'Cowboy Kate') if they also took 'African Image'. It has in the meantime become a collectors piece both among lovers of photo books and collectors of African art. It’s the latter aspect of Africa, its indigenous art, that forms the core theme of a title that Sam affectionately referred to simply as 'Image'.

Although there were many workshops and lectures in subsequent years, Sam didn't return to shoot in Africa until he produced the 1999 Pentax Calendar in the Cape a very different celebration.

Sam had admired the pictures of Brodovitch dynamically editing the layout of a Richard Avedon book with loose prints spread out on on a carpeted floor high in a Manhattan skyscraper. In a slower and vertical version of that process he taped the entire book to the studio wall (see photo below). Almost daily for many weeks he made changes and additions, refining sequence, cropping, and shooting fresh material to fill gaps until the entire book rang like a bell.

The quarterly Bergdorf Goodman magazine (March 2010) published this week features an article about African Image that includes some of the following spreads.

Apollo Photography

The recent and very worthy celebration of the moon missions has flooded our screens and print media with vintage imagery from the late sixties and early seventies. How the world-on-earth has changed! In amongst all the soul searching editorial about the future of space travel and NASA's confused years after Apollo, I felt that not nearly enough credit went to the astronauts for their extraordinary photography. Not only did they bring back images of earth that forever changed our perception about the magnificent and fragile planet we inhabit, they also returned with long hidden treasure. A series of primordial moonscapes that are as poetic, tender and moving as any landscape ever produced by a master photographer on earth.

Lovingly restored images from NASA's archives form a book called FULL MOON by Michael Light published in 1999 by Jonathan Cape and available in various formats from Amazon.

They may have been taken around 1970 but there is not a spec of moon dust that looks dated - these are truly windows onto eternity and a glimpse of our own planet in its infancy. Awe inspiring and enthralling.

Any serious photo library is incomplete without this book. Here's a scan of the jacket from my scuffed copy.

For those of you who would like a virtual visit to the moon it is now possible with the Moon in Google Earth.

150 Years of Nude Photography

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

The City Museum in Munich, until September 16 2009, have a show titled Nude Visions: 150 years of nude photography. The well curated exhibition and associated book/catalog includes some of my favourite photographers like Will McBride who are sometimes overlooked by similar ventures elsewhere.

Assembled by Ulrich Pohlman and Rudolf Scheutle the book is available in hardcover (ISBN: 978-3-86828-060-9) and softcover (ISBN: 978-3-86828-085-2), published by Kehrer, 2009.

The example of my work in the show is a print from 1964 based on the jail set for Cowboy Kate and shot in my Johannesburg studio. The image below is not the print in the Munich exhibition but it is from the same shoot and appears in the latest edition of Cowboy Kate.

Masters of 20th Century Photography

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

This 'heads up' comes a little late in the day - simply because I have only just been made aware of it.

The Museum of Modern Art in Lugano, Switzerland is hosting a show titled 'Masters of 20th Century Photography'.

The official title is: 'photo20esimo' - maestri della fotografia del XX secolo.

For those who are close to Southern Switzerland and want to catch this exhibition you have until January 11th 2009. The show opened in October.

Omissions

I do of course champion all celebrations of great photography but it is sad to see that the curators have omitted some real 20th century photographic giants like...

Guy Bourdin
Will McBride
Annie Leibowitz
Sarah Moon

...while including a number of very marginal so called 'masters'.

Here is a Google map link to the Museum's location.

5 October 2008-11 January 2009

Opening hours:
Tuesday-Sunday 10 a.m.-6p.m.
Monday closed

A catalogue is available but not online from the Museum. Artbooks.com have it in stock at the time of writing.

A short introduction to the catalogue can be viewed on the museum website.

Here is a list of the 174 artists (I have added links where possible). Looking down the list its sad to see how many colleagues have passed away recently, not least of all George Lewinsky who authored 'The Naked and the Nude - A History of Nude Photography.' He was senior lecturer at the London College of Printing and famous for photographing British Artists. His wife, Mayotte Magnus, although not on this list, is also an outstanding photographer.

Many of the so called lists of master photographers on the web are too coloured by the tastes of individual editors. Wikipedia has the potential to be the only comprehensive and detailed source of information about the world's best photographers. Please help make it so.
