Milton Glaser

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Milton Glaser is without doubt one of the most impressive artists I ever met.

His recent book 'Drawing is Thinking' (published by Overlook Press) is a view into an extraordinary and highly intelligent mind at work and play. Glaser is also acutely articulate and charming when talking about design and illustration in general as well as his own work. The interview with Peter Mayer in the book is an important complement to the drawings.

150 Years of Nude Photography

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

The City Museum in Munich, until September 16 2009, have a show titled Nude Visions: 150 years of nude photography. The well curated exhibition and associated book/catalog includes some of my favourite photographers like Will McBride who are sometimes overlooked by similar ventures elsewhere.

Assembled by Ulrich Pohlman and Rudolf Scheutle the book is available in hardcover (ISBN: 978-3-86828-060-9) and softcover (ISBN: 978-3-86828-085-2), published by Kehrer, 2009.

The example of my work in the show is a print from 1964 based on the jail set for Cowboy Kate and shot in my Johannesburg studio. The image below is not the print in the Munich exhibition but it is from the same shoot and appears in the latest edition of Cowboy Kate.

Belgian Surrealists and Apples

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Magritte wasn't just a mainstream surrealist, he was also capable of producing images of enormous tenderness and tactile humour. A series of photographs I produced - starting around 1970 - drew inspiration from the Belgian maestro and acted as a framework for my own experiments that were really rooted in pushing the boundaries of technical and visual illustration - with a camera.

I was prompted to post this image from my latest book FASHION ETCETERA, by the announcement of an exhibition in London featuring the work of a 20th century photographer and life adventurer, Marcel Mariën (also Belgian and also a surrealist with a penchant for using apples as subject matter) at the London Gallery Diemar / Noble Photography.
